05 Information Design: Uncanny Valley
Project Overview:
Working as a group, it is required to conceptualise, script, storyboard, design and animate a 40-180 second ‘Vox/Kurzgesagt-esque’ infomotion. The theme for the infomotion is ‘I’ve always wondered…’ and interpreted in any way which provides evidence of substantial research, eye-catching visuals and stimulating and appropriate audio on the chosen idea by means of a seamless and well-constructed narrative. The infomotion aims to explain an interesting/unusual idea which some people may have wondered, but not necessarily intending on researching in-depth and weave a unique narrative and variety of sources.

Project Deliverables:
- Moodboard
- Mini-assignments
- Storyboard
- 40-180 second infomotion

Design Strategy:
With the development of robotics and computer-generated imagery, the more realistic the humanoid features are becoming in reality and in videos. The point at which it gets uncomfortable for viewers is known as the ‘Uncanny Valley’. The interpretation of the theme can be interpreted in two ways, firstly as ‘I’ve always wondered why we get uncomfortable or keep watching creepy CGI videos’, or secondly as ‘I’ve always wondered what the Uncanny Valley is’. By incorporating a combination of found videos as real examples with self-generated imagery, the bright and visually stimulating style of the video with pink, blue and yellow intends to hold the viewers’ attention throughout the infomotion. The narratives unfolds through the historical background of the Uncanny Valley, why it is so popular, the graph, CGI and social media, why people sometimes feel repulsed and yet still watch the videos.
